Two years ago I started using infrared photography to explore Australian flora. I reflect on moving from Spain to Australia 10 years ago—a journey that often left me feeling alienated like living on another planet.
When I moved from Spain to Australia 10 years ago, everything felt unfamiliar—almost alien. The landscapes, the flora, the culture, and even the quality of the light seemed otherworldly. This sense of disconnection often left me feeling like an outsider navigating a strange new planet. Inspired by my lifelong love of sci-fi books and films, where explorers rely on technology to understand uncharted worlds, I turned to infrared photography to reinterpret the Australian landscape. Using this technique and editing software, I explore how reality and colour can be transformed to offer new perspectives—something that feels simultaneously scientific and fantastical. This project isn’t just about creativity; it’s deeply personal. It reflects my journey of adapting to a new environment while finding ways to connect with the natural world around me. At its core, it’s also about raising awareness of the delicate and unique ecosystems of this country and the whole planet.
Australia’s flora is extraordinary, but it’s under constant threat from human impact and climate change. By reimagining these landscapes in an otherworldly way, I hope to inspire others to see their beauty and fragility with fresh eyes. This project merges my love for storytelling, my interest in caring for the environment, and my fascination with the unknown—offering a bridge between science, art, and advocacy.
